New Year’s resolutions are typically defined as a tradition in which a person resolves to change a habit or trait that are thought of as undesirable. New Year’s resolutions often are thought of as having good intentions, but with no follow through.

In a survey of Westhill students, 55% made a New Years resolution, but 60% think they only sometimes work. What’s the point of students making resolutions if they don’t believe they’ll work? Or do they just believe they are different from other people making resolutions?

When asked the question “What is your overall opinion on New Year’s resolutions?” Jake Czaplicki (10) said “They’re good, but not exactly everyone follows through with them” while Maddie Nowicki (10) stated, “I mean if you’re actually gonna stick to them I think they’re great, but if you’re not gonna stick to it, like I think a lot of people, it’s kinda pointless.” People often start off the year inspired but lack the determination to follow through.

“People get so absorbed into their resolution and then become disappointed once it doesn’t work, and then they’re kinda like oh my year’s ruined, but really it’s not” stated Cami Cortez (10).

“By the second week of February, some 80 percent of those resolution-ers are back home with a new kind of remorse staring back at them in the mirror – the remorse of disappointment.” said US News. In the previously mentioned survey of Westhill students, they were asked “How many people who made resolutions do you think have quit by the second week of February?” and 65% of students said 80%, the correct answer. 20% guessed that the answer was 50%.

The debate on whether New Year’s resolutions are helpful or not continues, but it really depends on the resolution, the person, and their determination to fulfill it.
